    <value>Etching on laid paper. Head and shoulders portrait of a young man in profile facing right with natural, chin-length hair, curled upwards at the back. He wears a plain coat and neck-tie. Laid down on a larger sheet of paper which is inscribed in pen and ink: '- Cowper M.A. / Fellow of Benet College, / Cambridge. died 1771'. Both sheets are attached to a large sheet of wove paper, onto which a note in graphite has been added authored by Cowper scholar, N[eilson].C[ampbell]. Hannay: 'Date of Death should be March 20, _1770_ / N.C. Hannay'. See also P.14842-R, another (stronger) impression. Rev. John Cowper (1737-1770) became a Fellow of Corpus Christi (Benet) College, Cambridge in 1763. He was Rector of Foxton from 1765 until his death in 1770. He was the younger brother of William Cowper, the poet.</value>
