Polychrome silk embroidery on loosely woven linen(?), in cross, stem, running and encroaching satin stitch. 32.75cm x 43.5cm. 12 3/4" x 17 1/8" An undulating varied floral border enclosing two panels, the upper containing "An Address to the Supreme" surrounded by traditional small detached flora and fauna motifs. The lower panel depicts a building with two chimneys, probably a chapel with a crucifix above the door. The pictorial element framed by a lace-like repeat pattern giving the impression of an oval composition. The verse: Grant me great God a to the Inclined/ Increase my faith and rectify my mind/Teach me betime to tread thy sacred ways/And to thy service consecrate my days/Still as thro life's uncertain maze I stray/Be thou the guiding star to mark my way/Conduct the steps of my unguarded youth/ And ? their motions to the paths of truth. The verse is by Miss Elizabeth Carter (1717-1806), poet, classicist, writer and translator, a member of the Bluestocking Circle, daughter of Rev. Nicolas Carter, of Deal. Kent. The verse can be found in "Remember me! A new year's Gift or Christmas present" published in 1826 but obviously was published many decades earlier.
