  <description>
    <value>Woollen tammy cloth embroidered with red silk in cross stitch. On a cotton backing.
34cm x 34cm
13 1/4" x 13 1/4"

A very small scale outer border with an inner border of repeating bud and leaf pattern.

At the top a decorative upper case alphabet, a dividing narrow band, a small lower case alphabet.

Beneath the alphabets the inscription "The Dying Christian To His Soul"
"Vital spark of heavenly flame/ Quit,oh quit this mortal frame/Trembling, hoping, flying/O the pain, the bliss of dying/Cease fond Nature, cease thy strife/And let me languish into life.
Hark! they whisper, angels say/Sister spirit, come away/What is this absorbs me quite/Steals my senses, shuts my sight/Drowns my spirit, draws my breath/Tell me, my soul, can this be death.
The world recedes, it disappears/Heaven opens on my eyes! my ears/with sounds seraphic ring/Lend,lend your wings! I mount! I fly!/O grave! where is thy victory/O death! where is thy sting"

Inscription by Alexander Pope (1688-1744)

To either side of the verse are 3 detached floral motifs and elongated flowering trees with each with a perching bird, below is a short repeat pattern band, 7 detached motifs and finally the inscription" Alphington.....Mary Ann Connett May 21st 1869 Aged 12 years.......School.
