Inscribed beneath this are 3 verses, author unknown but they appeared at least as early as 1835 in compilations for Sunday Schools and Childrens' Hymns. Young children once to Jesus came/ His blessing to entreat/And I may humblydo the same/Before his mercy seat. For when their feeble hands were spread/And bent each knfant knee/Forbid them not the Saviour's aid/And so he says for me. Though now he is not here below/But on his heavenly hill/To him may little chisdren go/And seek a blessing still. Below is a band inscribed "Mary Trow Wellington House Ombersley Decbr 4th 1849" The final band contains alternating crowns and coronets. A Mary Trow was born in Kidderminster in 1840 , 9 miles from Ombersley. There seem to be several Trow families in the locality. The sampler is fairly plain and simple which suggests it was not made by a child of the family living in some style in Wellington House. Possibly Mary was a servant's daughter and attended and learnt to stitch in the village school or a Sunday school . . title: sampler LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Applied Arts collection: Butcher Collection STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/225699 CATEGORIES ------ category: embroidery DATING ------ CREATORS -------- maker: Mary Trow DIMENSIONS ---------- dimension: Height units: cm value: 32.2 dimension: Width units: cm value: 32
