  <description>
    <value>Cotton, embroidered with polychrome cottons (?) or silks in cross stitch.
33cm x 34cm
13" x 13 3/8"

A simple strawberry border encloses an upper section with symmetrically arranged traditional detached motifs placed either side of a large flower pot flanked by 2 small figures.

Beneath these is the inscription "that awful day Will surely come/ the appointed hour makes haste /When I must Stand before my Judge/ and pass my Solemn test 1834" This is the first verse of four from the hymn by Dr. Isaac Watts' (1674-1748) in "Hymns &amp; Spiritual Songs", 1707-1709,

The lower part of the sampler carries a depiction of Adam and Eve flanked by more symmetrically arranged traditional motifs. Sarah Rippon is worked either side of the pictorial centre.

Sarah may have been the daughter of William &amp; Mary Rippon and christened on the 8th June, 1823, Grimston, Leicester</value>
