object type: This medal refers to the seven Bishops committed to the Tower for opposing the Declaration of Indulgence issued by James II, and for refusing to allow it to be read in their churches. The Bishops committed to the Tower were Sancroft, Archbishop of Canterbury, Lloyd of St. Asaph, Ken of Bath and Wells, Turner of Ely, Lake of Chichester, White of Peterborough, and Trelawney of Bristol. To their portraits is here added that of Compton of London, who on account of his opposition to Popery had been removed from the Council table and Deanery of the Chapel Royal, and suspended from the execution of his episcopal office.
