The son of a non-conformist mathematics professor, he became a close friend of William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones and married the Pre-Raphaelite painter Evelyn Pickering (1855-1919), in 1887. As a ceramicist, De Morgan was primarily a designer\/decorator and chemist, working on bought-in blanks or pots thrown to his design. He experimented widely with techniques and glazes, re-discovering methods for making and applying lustres and the colours of  Persian and Iznik pottery and using them for a range of complex fantasy designs featuring ships, birds, flora and animals.  De Morgan was based at Merton Abbey (next door to Morris\u2019s factory) from 1882-8."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-108070","uid":"adlib-term-108070","uuid":"7e278258-23e3-3d5b-a4ff-ab5ecacb4bf3"},"summary_title":"19th Century, Late"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120127","uid":"adlib-term-120127","uuid":"ee2ddbd4-503c-30f5-8cf9-3c2d121bd315"},"summary_title":"Victoria I"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-113701","uid":"adlib-term-113701","uuid":"8db296e9-79cd-3284-980f-bb4b0ed570c1"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"England"}],"summary_title":"England","type":"country"}]],"summary_title":"Merton Abbey"}]}]},"materials":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42861","uid":"adlib-term-42861","uuid":"5b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956c"},"summary_title":"earthenware"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"26"},{"dimension":"Width","units":"cm","value":"16.5"}]},"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107528","uid":"adlib-term-107528","uuid":"faebcb95-d112-3092-a108-6ef52422726c"},"summary_title":"two-handled vase"}},{"value":"vase"}],"owners":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"publications":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"publication-1512","uid":"adlib-publication-1512","uuid":"723fec87-f251-39db-a24a-383ba68c3d51"},"summary_title":"The Designs of William De Morgan"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"publication-1513","uid":"adlib-publication-1513","uuid":"7388bc5a-bb83-3835-a489-5c4aa4dc9b88"},"summary_title":"William De Morgan Tiles"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"publication-1511","uid":"adlib-publication-1511","uuid":"dc57bb55-658d-3890-840f-f0d5036c88ef"},"summary_title":"William De Morgan"}],"school_or_style":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-12611","uid":"adlib-term-12611","uuid":"834b65f7-cfad-3dec-bca8-253a9e8b4281"},"summary_title":"Arts and Crafts (movement)"}],"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107528","uid":"adlib-term-107528","uuid":"faebcb95-d112-3092-a108-6ef52422726c"},"summary_title":"two-handled vase"}},"summary_title":"two-handled vase","techniques":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120082","uid":"adlib-term-120082","uuid":"ea83ed85-6b07-3e7e-83fc-440cfda22f7e"},"summary_title":"throwing"}}],"title":[{"value":"Two-handled vase"}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}
