IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 23108 accession number: PD.266-1973 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Saturday 6 August 2011 updated: Thursday 28 August 2025 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: This is a Chinese export watercolour depicting two mandarin ducks (Aix galericulata) by a lotus pond. The male duck, standing on the ground by the pond, displays its characteristic ornate plumage with distinctive brown, blue, and white markings, while the female in the water shows more subdued brown colouring with scaled patterns. Both birds are rendered with careful attention to their distinctive features, including the male's decorative crest and the female's more modest patterning. The scene features a prominent pink lotus flower in full bloom at the right side, accompanied by large round lotus leaves (lily pads) in rich green with visible vein patterns. The water is depicted with a stylized wave pattern in pale blue-grey tones. The ground is depicted in subtle earth tones with mossy dots. The painting uses fine, detailed brushwork typical of Chinese export art from the late 18th or early 19th century, combining traditional Chinese bird-and-flower painting style with Western watercolour. Previously described as “waterlilies and two ducks, one in the water, the other on the land”. title: drawing LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Paintings, Drawings and Prints collection: Broughton Collection STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/23108 SUBJECTS ------------------- plant plant TECHNIQUES ---------- watercolour and bodycolour on paper watercolour CATEGORIES ------ category: drawing DATING ------ creation date: 1820 - 1820 creation date earliest: 1820 creation date latest: 1820 culture: 19th Century CREATORS -------- maker: Canton workshop DIMENSIONS ---------- dimension: Height units: mm value: 404 dimension: Width units: mm value: 572 IMAGES surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/pdp/pdp67/PD_266_1973_CE.jpg height: 724 pixels width: 1024 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/pdp/pdp67/mid_PD_266_1973_CE.jpg height: 354 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/pdp/pdp67/PD_266_1973_CE.jpg height: 724 pixels width: 1024 pixels surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/pdp/pdp67/preview_PD_266_1973_CE.jpg height: 177 pixels width: 250 pixels surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/592/384/large_PD_266_1973_mas.jpg height: 768 pixels width: 1024 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/592/384/mid_PD_266_1973_mas.jpg height: 375 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/PD.266-1973_mas.tif surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/592/384/preview_PD_266_1973_mas.jpg height: 188 pixels width: 250 pixels surrogate: zoom format: pyramid tiff location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/592/384/PD_266_1973_mas.ptif height: 4008 pixels width: 5344 pixels
