Second of four states as given in Dodgson, where it is stated: 'There were 50 numbered impressions in all, covering the 4 states'. This print is no. 12 of 50. Dodgson gives No. 9 as second state and No. 27 as third state and so No. 12 likely to be second state. Signed in the margin at lower right: 'A. Legros'. Rectangular edition stamp on recto and verso in red ink with number added in pen and ink: 'Tiré a 50 épreuves [50 proofs] / Planche detruite [plate destroyed] / No 12'. Robert Guéraut's stamp ('RG' encircled, red ink) on the verso. Described in Malassis & Thibadeau [translated from the French]: 'Almost from the front, slightly inclined towards the left / About life size; executed in front of students of University College [London] in May 1877'. One of 20 prints on mounts printed with numbers and titles and contained inside a portfolio half-bound with green cloth (spine and corners) and grey paper and with printed title: 'Eaux-fortes / par Alphonse Legros.'. Acquisition information at lower centre written in pen and ink (probably by John Charrington): 'Given by Prof. A. Legros / 24 May 1879'.
