object type: After the painting by Sir Martin Archer Shee, P.R.A. (1769-1850), (c.1842; Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge). Bowstead graduated from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge as Doctor of Divinity in 1834 and was a Fellow and Tutor at the College until 1838. He became an Anglican clergyman and was Bishop of Lichfield from 23 January 1840 - 11 October 1843. Three quarter length, wearing a rochet and black tippet and standing in front of a curtain, looking towards the left. He holds a volume of 'Butler's Analogy' (Joseph Butler [1692-1752]) upright with spine facing outwards on a table to the left.
