object type: After the painting by Scottish artist, George Sanders (1774-1846), (?c.1825; Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire). Lady Elizabeth Howard (1780-1825) married John Henry Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland (1778-1857) in 1799. Full-length standing in an interior at Belvoir Castle, a curtain behind and window to the right through which four figures can be seen standing on a balcony on the exterior of the castle, the lakes seen in the distance. The Duchess wears her dark hair in short ringlets and is dressed in a gown of pale silk with leg-of-mutton sleeves and a cloak falling off the shoulders. She looks towards the viewer, her head slightly inclined towards the left. She holds a porte-crayon in her right hand and an open sketchbook in her left.
