    <value>After the painting by Scottish artist, George Sanders (1774-1846), (?c.1825; Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire). Lady Elizabeth Howard (1780-1825) married John Henry Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland (1778-1857) in 1799. Full-length standing in an interior at Belvoir Castle, a curtain behind and window to the right through which four figures can be seen standing on a balcony on the exterior of the castle, the lakes seen in the distance. The Duchess wears her dark hair in short ringlets and is dressed in a gown of pale silk with leg-of-mutton sleeves and a cloak falling off the shoulders. She looks towards the viewer, her head slightly inclined towards the left. She holds a porte-crayon in her right hand and an open sketchbook in her left.</value>

      <note>
        <value>Mezzotint with stipple (mixed method), printed in black ink. First state before the script lettering was strengthened and the word 'Proof' erased. Artists' names engraved in roman letters at lower left and right: 'Painted by G. Sanders, Esq.re' ... 'Engraved by S. Cousins, A.R.A.'. Title engraved in sloping script: 'Elizabeth, Duchess of Rutland / Second Daughter of Frderick, Earl of Carlisle, K.G. / Born 13th November 1780 - Died 28th November 1825'. 'Proof' engraved at far left and 'Private Plate' at far right. Autograph in facsimile at lower centre: 'E Rutland'. An engraved vignette of a coronet on cushion above the image in the margin at upper centre. The British Museum holds an impression of the second state following strengthening of the engraved title and removal of the word 'Proof' (see BM 1904,0414.15). The BM catalogue records a date of 1825, but the source of this information is undocumented.</value>
