Lawrence's portrait of John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon (1751-1838), a lawyer and Tory politician was painted between 1824 and 1826 when the sitter was an old man in his 70s. Half-length, seated, facing front,right arm resting on the arm of a chair. He wears a double-breasted coat buttoned at the left, with waistcoat visible and cravat at the neck.
