A horse reaches its head from outside the picture plane to smell the cabbages. A female customer wearing a wide-brimmed hat on the right carries a basket laden with artichokes and asparagus and is engaged in buying carrots from the female stallholder. The customer is unaware that a small boy crouching at the centre is emptying her purse of money as she haggles.
