<value>Mezzotint printed in black ink. Fully-lettered state, before the plate was altered by replacing the head to create a portrait of H.R.H. Frederica Charlotte, Duchess of York (See BM 1901,1014.46). The artists' names engraved in italics in the margin at lower left: 'Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds' and lower right: 'Engrav'd by V. Green, Mezzotinto Engraver to his Majesty & to the Elector Palatine.'. The title and publication details engraved below: 'Mary, Isabella, Duchess of Rutland / Publish'd July 1st 1780, by V. Green, No 29, Newman Street, Oxford Street.'. Inscribed in graphite on the verso: 'CBM [Charles Brinsley Marlay]'; '23' and an illegible inscription which probably relates to the alteration of the plate.</value>
