<value>Mezzotint. Scratched letter proof, trimmed to the platemark and within the platemark along the lower edge meaning that the publisher's details are missing. Scratched letters with title and production details: 'Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds'; 'Engraved by John Jacobé ['cobé' touched with pen and ink]'; 'The Hon.ble Miss Monckton' [lower edges of letters trimmed]. The scratched letters identify the proof as that published by Sarah Sledge. Inscribed on the verso in graphite: 'J.C.S. [Chaloner Smith] 6 I cut at foot'; 'CBM [Charles Brinsley Marlay]'; 'Proof [?print]'. P.19-1957 is a different state published by Boydell in 1781 (Chaloner Smith, 6.II). See also 974, a related monochrome sketch.</value>
