<value>Mezzotint. Proof before letters; after the inscription space created along the lower edge of the image but before the scraped inscription. Inscribed in graphite at lower left: 'Murillo' and in pen and ink at lower right: 'McArdell'. Inscribed on the verso in pen and ink: '6923' and in graphite: 'Vansittart Collection'; '512'. See BM for an impression after scraped inscription with reference to John Blackwood: 1877,0210.263. McArdell would have seen this painting by Murillo in the collection of John Blackwood from around 1760. See Notes.</value>

    <type>history note</type>
<value>VanSittart gave 1,485 engravings to the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1879 and this mezzotint was probably included within this group. The number written in pen and ink on the verso presumably relates to Vansittart's own cataloguing system and the number written in graphite on the verso to some kind of count by curators at the time of the acquisition.</value>
