object type: After the painting by Copley (1799; National Gallery, Scotland, NG 2661). The scene shows Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan (1731 - 1804) on the deck of his ship, Venerable, receiving the submission of the enemy in the form of the sword presented to him by Dutch Admiral, Jan Willem de Winter, whose ship, Vrijheid can be seen all aflame in the background. Duncan was a British Admiral who defeated the Dutch fleet off Camperdown (north of Haarlem) on 11 October 1797.
