Portrait of Henry Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck (1796-1824; styled Viscount Woodstock until 1809 and Marquess of Titchfield from 1809). As a young boy, wearing 'Van Dyck' dress, standing full-length and slightly to the left, in parkland landscape, facing the viewer, his right hand resting on a cane, his left pulling a cloak around his body. His left foot is positioned in front of his right, rosettes on the shoes. The BM has a lettered state (Hamilton II) and a number of progress and touched proofs of the plate, including 1902,1011.6131, which is probably most closely comparable with the Marlay impression. The lettered state (See BM 1855,0609.1879) bears the inscription: 'WILLIAM HENRY CAVENDISH SCOTT-BENTINCK DUKE OF PORTLAND \/ From the painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A., in the possession of his Grace at Welbeck \/ Engraved and Published by Mr Walker, 64, Margaret Street, Cavendish Square.' to left 'proof' and to right 'private plate'. Walker was based at 64, Margaret Street, Cavendish Square between 1830 and 1862 and so presumably produced this private plate at some point between these dates, possibly following the exhibition of the Reynolds portrait at the British Institution in 1856 (no.148)."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-106853","uid":"adlib-term-106853","uuid":"25492eb4-1164-35eb-8dce-3601486f3415"},"summary_title":"19th Century"}]}]},"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-98032","uid":"adlib-term-98032","uuid":"82c0807b-e8e4-3d5c-ac68-1a6390880fea"},"summary_title":"print"}}],"owners":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"school_or_style":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-9168","uid":"adlib-term-9168","uuid":"6b0c59e1-73cc-3b5c-8e54-56f42806ba6f"},"summary_title":"British"}],"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-98032","uid":"adlib-term-98032","uuid":"82c0807b-e8e4-3d5c-ac68-1a6390880fea"},"summary_title":"print"}},"summary_title":"print","techniques":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-29420","uid":"adlib-term-29420","uuid":"cdde8bbf-3351-30b6-a408-35afb32359aa"},"summary_title":"mezzotint"}}],"title":[{"value":"William Henry Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, Marquess of Titchfield"}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}
