Trimmed within the platemark. The laid paper support bears a large watermark and countermark. The watermark's design of the Christ symbol, 'I H S' and Latin cross indicates an eighteenth-century paper of French origin which most likely dates this trimmed impression to the period of the plate's original publication in 1778 (by Smith [Frankau, I-III] and Hannah Humphrey [Frankau, IV]) and to preclude the retouched plate published by Colnaghi in 1893 (Frankau, V). Inscribed on the verso in faded pen and ink: 'Mrs Carnac'. An illegible inscription in graphite on the verso at upper left. Inscribed on the verso in graphite, lower left: 'Col / April 49 / L. 11/'. This inscription may relate to when the print was coloured and its price: 'Col [coloured?] / April [18?]49 / L . 11/ [£11]'.
