  <description>
    <value>After the painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1775-6; Mannings, 311; Wallace Collection, London, P35). Elizabeth Carnac (1751-1780) was the daughter of Thomas Rivett MP who married John Carnac (1716-1800), a brigadier-general in the service of the East India Company, in 1769. She stands in a wooded, parkland landscape, full-length, facing front with her left hand tucked under her outer skirt, head turned in three-quarter profile to the right, wearing ostrich plumes in her hair.</value>

      <note>
        <value>Mezzotint printed in dark brown ink, with possible retouching around the eyes and mouth (see Notes) and with later hand colouring added in pink and blue pigments. Trimmed within the platemark. The laid paper support bears a large watermark and countermark. The watermark's design of the Christ symbol, 'I H S' and Latin cross indicates an eighteenth-century paper of French origin which most likely dates this trimmed impression to the period of the plate's original publication in 1778 (by Smith [Frankau, I-III] and Hannah Humphrey [Frankau, IV]) and to preclude the retouched plate published by Colnaghi in 1893 (Frankau, V). Inscribed on the verso in faded pen and ink: 'Mrs Carnac'. An illegible inscription in graphite on the verso at upper left. Inscribed on the verso in graphite, lower left: 'Col / April 49 / L. 11/'. This inscription may relate to when the print was coloured and its price: 'Col [coloured?] / April [18?]49 / L . 11/ [&#xA3;11]'. P.68-1957 is an impression of the scratched letter state (Russell/Frankau, II).</value>
