Pointing with the first finger of his right hand to a manuscript on a table which can be read to the left: 'An Act / to abolish / the Punishment / of public / whipping / of female / offenders / 7th July / 1817' and to the right: 'SPEECH / OF / [Lieutena] NT GENERAL / THORNTON / HIS MOTION / IN / [HO] USE OF COMMONS / 7th OF MAY 1818 / DECLARATIONS'. Three books on shelf behind and to the left with spines lettered:  'Campaigns / Flanders / Holland / Germany'; 'Edmund / Burke'; 'Hawkins / Browne'.</value>
