object type: After the portrait by John James Halls (1814; V&A, DYCE.78). Portrait of the actor, Edmund Kean (1787-1833) in the role of Shakespeare's Richard III. Full-length, standing with knees slightly bent and arms folded and with 'tortured' eyes. He holds a truncheon in his right hand and wears boots with spurs. He wears elaborate clothing of richly embroidered cloak trimmed with ermine with silk and velvet embroidered doublet and hose and ermine-trimmed cap with pearl crown above. Stands in a darkened doorway on castle ramparts.
