Half-length portrait of the geologist, John MacCulloch (1773-1835), seated and resting his left hand on the arm of the chair. His right hand holds a pen poised over a sheet of paper on a table to the left. MacCulloch wears a long, plush, double-breasted jacket with a fur collar over dark trousers, his left leg crossed over his right. His white shirt is open at the collar in an informal manner without a cravat.
