The black ground is decorated on the lid and sides in gold, silver and aogai (small pieces of blue-green inlaid shell) in hiramakie (low-relief sprinkled design) with circular medallions filled with flowers and foliage reserved on a gold meander ground.  The interior of the lid, the lower section and the base are all similarly decorated in gold and silver with phoenix, flowers and butterflies in a stencil-type design on a nashiji (shimmering spangles) ground.</value>
