He joined Wedgwood as Works Manager in 1927, and became joint Managing Director a few years before his retirement in 1963. His main contribution was in the technical modernisation of the factory, but he also created a number of decorative glazes and contributed to the design of successful tableware series.Wilson was inspired by Chinese ceramics, particularly those of the Sung Dynasty potters (960-1279 AD) which favour elegant shapes and rich glazes. His ‘Unique Wares’ feature a wide variety of forms and experimental glazes, sometimes using several glazes on a single pot. The shape number on this bowl, 1581, suggests it is an earlier example.referenceterm-110488adlib-term-1104884503a73a-ae49-3f4d-8814-88925dcd11a320th Century, Midreferenceterm-107700adlib-term-1077008f5360fb-b262-3ae9-8942-b81cc0e3e848Elizabeth IIreferenceterm-114582adlib-term-114582511cfe35-cd51-335e-b2a9-7683f4b84bd1literalEnglandEnglandcountryliteralStaffordshireStaffordshireregionBarlastonreferenceterm-42861adlib-term-428615b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956cearthenwareDiametercm20.5Heightcm8referenceterm-107667adlib-term-1076671b81c806-cfb7-3291-9803-525db5f75e09bowlreferenceterm-90855adlib-term-90855b48207ec-774d-3e3e-8ab3-536996bc5dacdishhistory notePresented by Lesley Boyd, daughter of Sir Ivor and Lady Batchelor, St Andrew’s, Fife.1same makerreferenceobject-12154adlib-object-121547d284d4f-394d-336e-99e7-a28eee8db9cc1reference1term-89480adlib-term-89480f1ea518e-351c-3f42-b2a7-db0f8559fa2cvasevase1referenceobject-205005adlib-object-2050057ea09bcf-4955-3615-91ec-3a1e6f3e0af81reference1term-89480adlib-term-89480f1ea518e-351c-3f42-b2a7-db0f8559fa2cvasevasereferenceagent-149638adlib-agent-1496387376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8The Fitzwilliam MuseumCf. examples and descriptions of Wilson Unique Wares.160-173referencepublication-200002995adlib-publication-20000299517fd0bcb-7c08-3cba-accb-8782e943357aContributions of Norman Wilson to the Modernisation of Wedgwood in the Twentieth Century, Proceedings of the Twenty-sixth Annual Wedgwood International Seminar, May 7-9, 1981, The Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, MarylandCf. a bowl of similar glaze and shape (though interior lines straight)different glaze and surface) and other pieces, all shapes and glazes developed by Norman Wilson 1930-60.pp. 224-6referencepublication-1035adlib-publication-103515c007c0-86a5-3d45-beb8-29e69b3fbc75Wedgwood Ceramics 1846-1959Cf.
