At least 3 different copyists, and probably more. The hands have been roughly dated 1595, 1600, 1610 and 1620. Pieces added in a different hand within any one of the four collections have been distinquished only by date. Leaves 74-97 are said to be copied by Tisdale, and are known and published as "Tisdale's virginal book" but the two pieces by "Tisdale" may be in a different hand from most of this part of the collection. Manuscript paper printed by "T.E." (Thomas East), 2 x 5 staves with gap (leaves 1-72), 10 staves without gap (leaves 73-125). Watermark: Pot. Modern foliation omits blank pages. Leaves 3v-18v are paginated "1"-"30"; leaves 19-70 have an original foliation "30"-"80", leaves 74-97 have an original foliation "1"-"24" Former shelf mark: 52.D.25.
