  <description>
    <value>A manuscript containing four collections of music, with a miscellany between the first two: 1) 47 Italian madrigals ; 1a) miscellany of 15 madrigals, songs and fantasias by Cato, Dowland and da Rore; 2) Tisdale's virginal book, containing 47 pieces; 3) 21 English songs; 4) 9 Metrical psalms, with words by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, John Standish's compilation of Genevan psalms, John Silvester, and anon.
At least 3 different copyists, and probably more. The hands have been roughly dated 1595, 1600, 1610 and 1620. Pieces added in a different hand within any one of the four collections have been distinquished only by date.
Leaves 74-97 are said to be copied by Tisdale, and are known and published as "Tisdale's virginal book" but the two pieces by "Tisdale" may be in a different hand from most of this part of the collection.
