        <summary_title>Burne-Jones, Edward</summary_title>
      </maker>
      <note>
        <value>Identified by A.C. Sewter (letter to Museum, 14 November 1970) as a design for part of the East window at St. John the Evangelist, Torquay, 1865. On July 28th, Burne-Jones charged Morris and Co. for '2 figures / of angel and Saint / at same rete as / May 20' (5.0.0.), and this could be a reference to the present drawing.
Previously it had been considered, with 690a and b, as one of the Lyndhurst designs, conveniently identifiable with the 'Angel and woman' listed by Bell ('Edward Burne-Jones', 1892, p. 112) and inlcuded in the account book under 2 February 1862. Unfortunately a close comparison of the three cartoons does not bear out this suggestion. The two Lyndhurst designs are handled in a similar manner, both drawn in ink and graphite with wash lines added later. Its appearance suggests that it is a later work, an opinion with which A.C. Sewter agrees (see letter in file).</value>
