<value>Text from object entry in A. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: Bob Crooks studied at West Surrey College of Art and Design spending a student year working at the Glasshouse, London, as assistant to Ronnie Wilkinson (1928–92), the former Master Glassmaker at Whitefriars Glassworks. Following a period as the workshop manager with Glassworks Ltd, Crooks established his own company, First Glass, in Gloucestershire in 1990, relocating to London in 1994 and to its current home in Devon in 2002. He is a master of hot-glass techniques: each piece is designed, made and finished by him without the use of moulds. The brilliant colours and patterns of plant forms are a constant source of ideas, as are the properties of the material itself. In 2008 he was awarded the Glass Sellers Art Award by the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers. This and the following item formed part of a series of anniversary commissions for the florist Paula Pryke as part of an exhibition Spring Fever at Contemporary Applied Arts, London in 2000. ‘Athleticism and quick decision-making are essential in hot glassmaking. The storm and stress of hot glassmaking are what gets Bob Crooks’ creative juices flowing. He is above all a colourist, who makes colours sing and dance: because of the fluency one forgets that it is born of great technical ingenuity and consummate skill.’ Dan Klein (1938–2009), glass historian, curator, author and decorative arts specialist</value>
