Rectangular relief of a biblical scene set in Ancient Greece or Rome. The setting is of classical temples and woods, the trees being garlanded with flowers and wreaths. At the extreme left is an altar-like structure, raised on five steps. The area is liberally covered with laurel wreaths, privet and classical pots. At the altar stands a bearded high priest, attended by a girl with a lyre. The priest is about to sacrifice a bull which has just been led in. Many people have gathered to watch, and soldiers are in evidence. The sacrifice is halted by a young man in an ornate chariot which has been drawn by two slaves who kneel at the altar steps. title: relief NOTES ----- type: history note value: Charles and Lavinia Handley-Read (both died 1971) LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Applied Arts creditline: Purchased with the Perceval Fund, and with a contribution from the Victoria and Albert Grant-in-Aid Fund STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/29829 PEOPLE ------------------- Doulton, Henry female soldiers Priest man slave SUBJECTS ------------------- lyre altar chariot bull (animal) laurel wreath privet sacrificing The Sons of Cydippe temple Rome Greece lyre altar chariot bull (animal) laurel wreath privet sacrificing The Sons of Cydippe temple Rome Greece TECHNIQUES ---------- terracotta relief relief CATEGORIES ------ category: sculpture category: terracotta category: Doulton Lambeth ware DATING ------ creation date: 1884 - 1884 creation date earliest: 1884 creation date latest: 1884 culture: 19th Century, Late culture: Victoria I CREATORS -------- maker: Doulton & Co. maker: Tinworth, George CITATIONS -------- The Builder, October 25th 1884 The Doulton Lambeth Wares George Tinworth British and Continental Glass, 16th -26th March The Harriman Judd Collection Part Two, October 6th, 2001 --- IMAGES surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa14/M_24_1972_281_29.jpg height: 416 pixels width: 760 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa14/mid_M_24_1972_281_29.jpg height: 274 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa14/M_24_1972_281_29.jpg height: 416 pixels width: 760 pixels surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa14/preview_M_24_1972_281_29.jpg height: 137 pixels width: 250 pixels surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa14/M_24_1972_282_29.jpg height: 416 pixels width: 760 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa14/mid_M_24_1972_282_29.jpg height: 274 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa14/M_24_1972_282_29.jpg height: 416 pixels width: 760 pixels surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa14/preview_M_24_1972_282_29.jpg height: 137 pixels width: 250 pixels
