A central, mostly nude, male figure holds his arms aloft, flanked on either side by a woman with a young child (the woman on his left with a book by her side). To the right, another male figure holds aloft his former chains. The background shows a body of water with a ship and some Pyramids (?) in the distance. This scene is printed on both sides of the body of the jug. Beneath the rim (exterior and interior) is a floral border with a central cartouche showing miniature figures by the sea, a ship in the background - a white figure kneeling and offering something to a standing black figure. Unlike many abolitionist ceramics, which depict enslaved people as powerless and grateful, this jug depicts enslaved people as joyful to be free of their bondage. Details, such as the inclusion of a book, also hint at more complex lives than those often depicted in art or on objects. In reality, the formerly enslaved in the British West Indies (over the age of six years old) were made to continue working for their former masters under an unpaid apprentice system lasting four to six years. This period ended prematurely on 1 August 1838, when full emancipation was granted for all enslaved people (see plate C.7-2021)."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120816","uid":"adlib-term-120816","uuid":"b8c35cb6-f02f-34c9-9dda-b3120e12c749"},"summary_title":"19th Century, second quarter"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-109918","uid":"adlib-term-109918","uuid":"b99df2d6-5877-350a-aba8-e750da5d9ef0"},"summary_title":"William IV"}]}]},"materials":[{"note":[{"value":"white"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42861","uid":"adlib-term-42861","uuid":"5b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956c"},"summary_title":"earthenware"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"12.8"},{"dimension":"Width","units":"cm","value":"15.5"}]},"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-89400","uid":"adlib-term-89400","uuid":"194f8c99-93e1-30de-9465-9209222dafaa"},"summary_title":"jug"}}],"note":[{"type":"history note","value":"Robin Simpson; purchased at his sale, the Robin Simpson Collection of Commemorative Ceramics, Woolley & Wallis auction, 8 September 2021, lot 515."}],"objects":[{"@link":{"cascade":true,"role":[{"value":"same subject"}],"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"object-307501","uid":"adlib-object-307501","uuid":"2b3c0f8b-6ef1-3c02-868d-1eea810b83be"},"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"impact":true,"type":"reference","workflow":true},"admin":{"id":"term-34935","uid":"adlib-term-34935","uuid":"b6750733-fe79-33fc-b39a-c296fcd223b4"},"summary_title":"plate"}},"summary_title":"plate"}],"owners":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"publications":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"publication-5832","uid":"adlib-publication-5832","uuid":"6528f924-ec33-3052-ad37-795abfb26bcf"},"summary_title":"Commemorative Pottery, 1780-1900: a guide for collectors"}],"school_or_style":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-9168","uid":"adlib-term-9168","uuid":"6b0c59e1-73cc-3b5c-8e54-56f42806ba6f"},"summary_title":"British"}],"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-89400","uid":"adlib-term-89400","uuid":"194f8c99-93e1-30de-9465-9209222dafaa"},"summary_title":"jug"}},"summary_title":"jug","techniques":[{"note":[{"value":"presumed lead-glaze"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120062","uid":"adlib-term-120062","uuid":"d05176fb-17b8-3888-bba1-6c5e6c77d206"},"summary_title":"lead-glazing"}},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107569","uid":"adlib-term-107569","uuid":"3f627753-e93a-3ecd-b2ed-3e83051cd5e5"},"summary_title":"printed onglaze"}}],"title":[{"value":"Jug"}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}
