The sitter is turned to the front, facing and looking a quarter left. He is bare-headed, bald, with side whiskers. His throat is bare. He wears a low cut, straight topped, full garment, over which falls a drapery encircling the neck. Maltby studied at the University of Cambridge, entering Pembroke College in 1789. Maltby distinguished himself as a student at Cambridge, winning won four medals and being the Craven scholar of 1791.
