It was believed to have been executed for the Duke of Melzi, Aide-de-Camp to Napoléon. The ADC left it in his will to his executor Giorgio Granetti of Pisa, who presented it to G.C. Heath in 1825.There is an almost exact correspondence between this bust, however, and the well-known one by Canova (from a head modelled in 1802), which was presented to Napoléon by the artist in Paris in 1805. As the Battle of Marengo took place in 1800, it would seem that the present bust was not, in fact, modelled from life at that date.referenceterm-106853adlib-term-10685325492eb4-1164-35eb-8dce-3601486f341519th Centuryreferenceterm-106541adlib-term-106541a722e742-9861-3f0b-a35f-23e32a89179dliteralItalyItalycountryFerrarareferenceterm-37963adlib-term-37963929f6c25-5677-3624-90d4-f6d882da98ecwhite marblereferencemedia-15854adlib-media-15854e541a928-0e1f-3d7a-a832-37bea3baafa6jpegaa/aa9/M_1_1860_281_29.jpg1heightpixels740widthpixels57016162829146241imagejpegaa/aa9/mid_M_1_1860_281_29.jpg1heightpixels649widthpixels50016162829146241imagejpegaa/aa9/M_1_1860_281_29.jpg1heightpixels740widthpixels57016162829146241imagejpegaa/aa9/preview_M_1_1860_281_29.jpg1heightpixels325widthpixels25016162829146241image0media
