Alabaster carved in high relief with traces of the original colour and gilding. Rectangular. In front on the left: the Virgin and St Matthew with a satchel slung over the left shoulder. In front on the right: St John with a palm resting on his left shoulder and raising his right arm, and St Jude with his boat in his left hand. A mound rises behind these figures, on either side of which are seen four more apostles, the most prominent of which is St Bartholomew, holding a large knife in his left hand (his head is lost). Above in the centre is the lower part of the figure of Christ disappearing into clouds.
Colouring: The boulders on which the four front figures kneel still bear traces of the red rosettes that decorated them. Again on the mound above St John's head a red rose is distinguishable. Traces of the original gilding appear on St Jude's beard and hair, and elsewhere throughout the plaque.M.3-19231accession numberM.3-192331303priref31303external IDCAM_CCF_M_3_1923urihttps://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/31303https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/31303referenceagent-149638adlib-agent-1496387376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8The Fitzwilliam MuseumGiven by the Friends of the Fitzwilliam Museumreferenceagent-149645adlib-agent-14964510925b71-6838-30f7-a8dd-b68a2afaa14dThe Friends of the Fitzwilliam Museum192319231923givenEntry date: 1923-05-181420CE1420circa1420productionreferenceagent-149652adlib-agent-1496520d4f90dc-b166-3d4b-b0db-25f4118b6e98UnknownThis panel may have formed part of an altarpiece comprising several alabaster reliefs of scenes from the life of Christ in a wooden frame.referenceterm-106363adlib-term-1063639d929f3d-6c41-34ea-a260-021d55d1b1d315th Century, Early#referenceterm-106902adlib-term-10690208607d73-eca0-3f27-80d8-8302d7eb3ba1literalEnglandEnglandcountryliteralNottinghamshireNottinghamshireregionNottinghamreferenceterm-31047adlib-term-31047829e5007-8c4a-349e-a965-f2d561129e7dalabasterDepthcm5Heightcm42.4Widthcm25.1referenceterm-98879adlib-term-98879a807b416-0933-32ec-ac29-34611d921ed9reliefhistory note18th May 1923: Collection of Mr Grosvenor Thomas (sale catalogue no. 291)referenceagent-149638adlib-agent-1496387376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8The Fitzwilliam Museumreference numberliteralnameSculpture UKSculpture UKPubl.
