Sides: Carved with scenes from the Martyrdom of St Catherine: her examination before Maxentius, the burning of the philosophers, the torture of the wheel, the beheading of the saint and her soul carried up to heaven. Mounts: Decorated alternately with panels of red, green and blue with pelican-like birds, salamanders and other fabulous beasts reserved in the metal. Lock-plate: Decorated with a hare in a field against a dark blue sky.
