KING'. Signed on the plate at upper right: 'A. Legros'. Inscribed in graphite on the verso: '531\/11' (an old location reference relating to the Ricketts and Shannon Bequest of 1937). The rosary beads are barely delineated, but their existence is described in Poulet-Malassis\/Thibadeau: '... les mains roulent un chapelet ...'. \nThe plate was first published in 1872 in the journal, _The Portfolio: an artistic periodical_ as an illustration to the third number in the series written by editor, Philip Gilbert Hamerton, 'Examples of Modern Etching \/ III - Alphonse Legros \/ _Aged Spaniard_' (_The Portfolio_, vol. 3, January 1872, London: Seeley, pp.36-7). Here, Hamerton described the effect of Legros's portrait: 'To me, this old man's face has a lasting fascination. In the late evening of his life he prays in saddened peace. Grave he is and serious, yet not miserable, not desolate. He has reached those quiet confines where earthly cares have ceased to agitate. What to him is the tumult of the outer world as he sits in silent prayer and the beads drop one by one?' \nThe plate and text were re-issued in a collection of the series in 1876, appearing as number IX in the publication, _Examples of Modern Etching: twenty plates by Balfourier, Bodmer ... [et al.]_ \/ with notes by Philip Gilbert Hamerton (London: Seeley, Jackson, and Halliday, pp.17-19).\nThis third state can be identified by the horizontal line just visible across the collar of the cape (cf. Boston Public Library, Frank E. Bliss collection, 07_09_000068). The two previous states listed in the Bliss catalogue [Dodgson (Legros)] display varying degrees of accidental lines which, in the first state, include two horizontal lines across the width of the plate above the head and a semi-circular line which touches the end of the mouth (these lines are described in Poulet-Malassis\/Thibadeau). There are impressions of first and second states in the Bliss collection at Boston Public Library; 07_09_000066 and 07_09_000067.\nThe laid paper support of this impression is unlike the wove stock used for the proofs published in The Portfolio.\nP.16-2019 is another impression of the third state printed onto heavy wove paper."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-106853","uid":"adlib-term-106853","uuid":"25492eb4-1164-35eb-8dce-3601486f3415"},"summary_title":"19th Century"}]}]},"medium":[{"materials":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-34672","uid":"adlib-term-34672","uuid":"c92093a8-d4e3-36f4-b9b7-632306ca85cb"},"summary_title":"black carbon ink"}}]}],"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-98032","uid":"adlib-term-98032","uuid":"82c0807b-e8e4-3d5c-ac68-1a6390880fea"},"summary_title":"print"}}],"owners":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"school_or_style":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-8399","uid":"adlib-term-8399","uuid":"6611ae15-9298-340e-8c20-9fc4c7a76bf8"},"summary_title":"French"}],"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-98032","uid":"adlib-term-98032","uuid":"82c0807b-e8e4-3d5c-ac68-1a6390880fea"},"summary_title":"print"}},"summary_title":"print","techniques":[{"description":[{"value":"chine coll\u00e9 etching with surface tone"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-99807","uid":"adlib-term-99807","uuid":"6a23afb4-3d15-3ece-a1f8-29cd185df9ca"},"summary_title":"etching"}},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-113147","uid":"adlib-term-113147","uuid":"bf38ff21-b270-3a4b-be02-392a8841939a"},"summary_title":"surface tone"}},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-26853","uid":"adlib-term-26853","uuid":"847c7b69-438f-3bee-877a-76042f727e83"},"summary_title":"chine coll\u00e9"}}],"title":[{"translation":[{"value":"Aged Spaniard"}],"type":"assigned","value":"Vieil Espagnol"}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}
