This is a Chinese export watercolour depicting a flowering rose branch. It shows a blooming pink rose with many layered petals. The petals transition from darker pink to lighter tones to give a dimensional quality. There are several thorny stems branching off at different points. The plant displays the characteristic compound leaves of roses; some leaves show brown edges. On the right side are two rose buds with spiky, reddish sepals. The painting demonstrates the fine brushwork characteristic of Chinese export art from the late 18th or early 19th century, combing traditional Chinese flower-and-bird painting style and Western botanical illustration. title: drawing LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Paintings, Drawings and Prints collection: Broughton Collection STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/32387 SUBJECTS ------------------- plant plant TECHNIQUES ---------- watercolour heightened with white, over traces of graphite , on thin paper, tipped in on the cream coloured album sheet watercolour CATEGORIES ------ category: drawing DATING ------ culture: 19th Century CREATORS -------- maker: Canton workshop DIMENSIONS ---------- dimension: Height units: mm value: 374 dimension: Width units: mm value: 300
