  <description>
    <value>Soft-paste porcelain bowl and stand, moulded, and painted in blue underglaze, and gilt. The oval bowl has flared sides moulded with overlapping strawberry leaves and tendrils. The stand is similarly shaped with eight naturalistically moulded vine leaves forming the border. The leaves are painted in runny dark blue with an uncoloured vine leaf in reserve on either side of the bowl. Both pieces show traces of 'cold' (unfired) gilding.</value>

      <note>
        <value>This bowl and stand was attributed to William Littler's factory at Longton Hall in Staffordshire, in Bernard Rackham's Catalogue of the Glaisher Collection . . . (1935). By 1998 it had been reattributed to his factory at West Pans in Scotland which was operating from 1764. It has been difficult to decide whether some types of Littler's porcelain was made in one or other factory, but scientific analysis of the cobalt used to produce the blue pigments may make it possible to do so more securely for this type of ware. See Documentation.</value>

      <notes>Ref. The authors discuss the sources of cobalt in Saxony, England and Scotland, its processing into zaffre or smalt, and use as an underglaze pigment at Longton Hall and West Pans. They describe their methods of testing and concluded that 'the vast majority of the West Pans items tested were, as suspected, decorated with cobalt either lacking, or having low bismuth, which makes it likely but not certain that the blue colouring derived from the Scottish Alva mine.'</notes>
