Air was after the statue by Etienne Le Hongre (1628-90) at the Fontaine du Soir or Cabinet des Combat d'Animaux. The intermediate source may have been pls. 95-8 in Thomassin's Receuil (see Documentation) or reduced size bronzes, such as those of Water and Air in the Green Vaults in Dresden which belonged to Augustus the Strong, and of which other examples are known. The bronzes seem more likely because both the bronze and porcelain figures of Water are Neptune's, whereas Le Brun's design, the statue and the engraving after it are female. The statue of Fire, also female, has been transformed into a youth, perhaps Vulcan. Air conforms to the pose of the original and the bronze, rather than to pl. 95 in the Receuil which is in reverse. This suggests that like so many other English figures of this period, Meissen models were their direct prototypes.referenceterm-106496adlib-term-106496bd563695-7339-3178-a8c4-25189907099318th Century, Mid#referenceterm-107736adlib-term-107736e93a8dd1-d76d-320b-be9b-afa352e322a1George IIreferenceterm-107437adlib-term-10743796f4b0d1-fc11-39ff-ae91-1b23d888d479George IIIreferenceterm-110490adlib-term-110490bb9026c5-22c6-3c07-8c4c-b6817acc50c4literalEnglandEnglandcountryliteralEssexEssexregionStratford-le-Bowpresumed leadreferenceterm-107733adlib-term-10773300160189-e3ce-3796-a88b-5aa8d6c808c4lead-glazepresumed phosphaticreferenceterm-37637adlib-term-3763789b09133-dc0a-3a88-bd40-5aef1ad30ecbsoft-paste porcelainHeightcm21.2referenceterm-107454adlib-term-1074546ca0f2ab-c1f8-329d-8a45-8f1322f53a20figurehistory notePurchased in London from Mr Stoner (Frank?) on 25 November 1918 for £20 by Dr J.W.L. From a set of Elements, B41 in Bradshaw's list of Bow figures, see p. 171, B41. Bradshaw notes the letter 'T' impressed on the underside of some of the Bow Muses, and on other figures. This 'T' or 'To' also occurs on Worcester and Plymouth and Bristol porcelain. Its meaning is not certain. It has been identified as the mark of a repairer and modeller named Tebo or Thiebaud, who between 1774-5 for Wedgwood, but for whom no evidence has been found for working at Bow. The other suggestion is that the marks stand for a member of the Toulouse family, of whom a Charles Toulouse was mentioned in the Bow Paris Register in October 1750. See p. 29 and p. 43.
