The oblong base has a ventilation hole under the tree trunk, moss round the side and front edges, and five scrolled feet with a pierced rocaille motif between the front two. At the back there are two square apertures to take attachments. On the viewer's left there is a semi-circular wall with a central putto's head spewing water into a basin below, and at top left, a vase of flowers. On the right there is a tree with three branches bearing applied polychrome flowers, and leaves. A squirrel sits in the angle between the branches on the left. The shepherd stands in front of the tree with his feet apart, holding his bagpipes under his left arm. He wears a black tricorn hat with gold edges, a blue bow, and a red and white striped bow; a white shirt and a yellow neck tie; a pink coat with a yellow lining and gold buttons; a waistcoat with a pink and gold floral pattern over blue and white stripes; dark pink breeches with a different floral pattern; white stockings and black shoes with dark pink and gold ribbons. On the viewer's right, a sheep grazes on moss; in front of the shepherd's feet there is a recumbent white and purplish-grey dog with a yellow collar; and on the left is a recumbent lamb with a blue collar.
