IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 41963 accession number: C.69-1932 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Saturday 6 August 2011 updated: Tuesday 25 February 2020 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: Soft-paste porcelain containing bone ash, figure of Cupid with a Bocage Candlestick, press-moulded, with hand-modelled details, covered with slightly turquoise tinted lead-glaze and painted underglaze in blue, and overglaze in pale blue, yellowish-green, yellow, flesh pink, dark pink, red, purple, and pale brown, and gilt. The concave underside is glazed overall. The approximately circular base has incurved sides with five kidney-shaped holes at the front, a triangular hole to take an attachment at the back, and a scrolled edge forming five low supports. At the back is a tree trunk with lateral branches bearing polychrome applied flowers and leaves, and at the top, a drip pan formed by six leaves, and a candle nozzle with a shaped edge picked out in underglaze blue and gold. A plump Cupid kneels in front of the tree with his right hand on the tree and his left hand raised in front of it. He has brown hair, grey eyes, ruddy cheeks, and pink and yellow wings, and wears a garland of flowers on his head, a pink patterned drape and a garland of flowers. On the base in front of him there are applied flowers and leaves, a flaming torch, and a brown and pale purple patched dog with a gold collar.
