DESCRIPTIVE DATA
----------------
object type: Soft-paste porcelain, slip-cast, and painted overglaze in green, a little yellow, flesh-pink, red, brown, and a little black enamel, and gilt. The mainly unglazed underside has a central ventilation hole, and four patch marks in the corners. The group is supported on a rectangular pedestal base. The lower part has projecting corners decorated with rosettes, and on the sides, swags in relief. Above, the sides are fluted and concave with a moulding round the top. The Virgin sits on a chair with her left foot on the pedestal and her right resting on a low green footstool. She holds the nude infant Christ round his chest with both hands, supporting him on her right knee. He holds up his right hand in blessing, and in his left holds a small posy of two flowers and foliage. The Virgin wears a white shawl with a gold edge over her head, a long gown semé with gold floral sprays, and red strap sandals. Her face and hair, and that of Christ are painted naturalistically in flesh pink and brown. His posy is yellow and green. The chair is outlined in gold. The rosettes on the base have gold centres and the top and lower edges of its upper part have a horizontal gold band running round them.
