In Renaissance Italy, devotion to the Name of Jesus increased, in part encouraged by the Franciscan preacher Bernardino of Siena, who held up a painted panel with the letters ‘YHS’ during his sermons. The sacred monogram ‘IHS’ was often to be found in the Renaissance home, inscribed above doorways, painted onto plates and dishes and used as a decorative theme on furniture or jewellery.referenceterm-119802adlib-term-1198029bb50ce2-9f14-381c-bfc9-251c675937d316th Century, second half#referenceterm-10618adlib-term-106189ebc0ae1-8cf8-312b-832c-9cf44da02136Renaissancereferenceterm-113219adlib-term-113219166f4ea1-bd03-3f2e-bc7c-ce2145959ec5literalItalyItalycountryliteralTuscanyTuscanyregionMontelupobase unglazedreferenceterm-39575adlib-term-39575cdf6707a-1eeb-3622-a26b-6e54f1f8d4abtin-glazereferenceterm-42861adlib-term-428615b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956cearthenwareDiametercm36.2Heightcm4referencemedia-200321adlib-media-20032165fc50ec-02d3-3e6c-8bdf-90d4deee1ff7jpegaa/aa35/C_189_1991_201601_kly25_dc2.jpg1heightpixels778widthpixels102417029267811921imagejpegaa/aa35/mid_C_189_1991_201601_kly25_dc2.jpg1heightpixels380widthpixels50017029267811921imagejpegaa/aa35/C_189_1991_201601_kly25_dc2.jpg1heightpixels778widthpixels102417029267811921imagejpegaa/aa35/preview_C_189_1991_201601_kly25_dc2.jpg1heightpixels190widthpixels25017029267811921image0media
