This shape of vessel was used for dedications and was copied in faience for new year flasks. In the later periods during the Christian era vessels of similar shape were used to collect the wax from candles buring over the graves of saints and martyrs. Earlier this form of flask could be used to carry liquid. this example has a light red/brown wash on the surface.
