IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 59120 accession number: E.GA.4668.1943 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Saturday 6 August 2011 updated: Tuesday 25 February 2020 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: Clay hand made bowk with painted decoration of inverted triangles in basket-pattern in red paint. The inside is black and the outside is light brown in colour. the walls are very thin, measuring 2.0-5.0 mm in thickness. The inside is burnished (rubbed with a hard object) and the outside is burnished and polished over the painted decoration. the result of this technique is that the lines have smudged. It is possible that the final polish was done with soft leather, this has acheived a softer finish and appearance on the surface. The pot has a pointed base and will not stand unaided; this was typical of such early pottery and would have needed either a basket or stand to support it. This vessel belongs to a group of Nubian pottery known as A-group. this is a dating sequence and this particular example comes towards the end of the period. There are many breaks to the walls of the vessel, which have been repaired. Some pieces are missing and have been filled. object type: Clay hand made bowl with painted decoration in the form of painted triangles. title: bowl LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Antiquities STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/59120 TECHNIQUES ---------- painted TECHNIQUES ---------- burnished TECHNIQUES ---------- hand made CATEGORIES ------ category: vessel DATING ------ creation date: 3000 - 3000 creation date earliest: 3000 creation date latest: 3000 culture: terminal A-Group DIMENSIONS ---------- dimension: Diameter units: m value: 0.206 dimension: Height units: m value: 0.201 EXHIBITIONS HISTORY ------------------- title: Umm el-Ga'ab CITATIONS -------- Africa in antiquity : the arts of Ancient Nubia and the Sudan Umm El-Ga`ab : pottery from the Nile Valley before the Arab conquest --- IMAGES surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/ant/ant32/E_GA_4668_1943.jpg height: 760 pixels width: 581 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/ant/ant32/mid_E_GA_4668_1943.jpg height: 654 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/ant/ant32/E_GA_4668_1943.jpg height: 760 pixels width: 581 pixels surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/ant/ant32/preview_E_GA_4668_1943.jpg height: 327 pixels width: 250 pixels
