IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 71182 accession number: C.102-1935 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Saturday 6 August 2011 updated: Tuesday 12 July 2016 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: fritware, probably wheel thrown, painted in black and blue under a clear, crazed glaze Shape: cono-segmental bowl with slightly everted rim and low foot ring Interior: on the rim a dentilated pattern is painted in black. Radiating from the base and occupying the body, a black ‘Maltese’ cross, painted with blue edging, contains Arabic inscriptions (cursive) in reserve. Four panels created by this cross contain, in their upper sections, a black lobbed medallion with cross hatched central lozenge and sprouting ‘V’ shapes containing peacock’s eyes painted on a blue background. These medallions are flanked by black ferns. On the base, within a pair of concentric lines, the narrowest sections of the panels contain black flowers highlighted with blue. Exterior: all decoration is painted in black, with a concentric band on the rim and circular scrolls with outlined leaves on the body. On the foot ring, glaze runs unevenly over the surface and a clay adhesion indicates contact with another vessel in the kiln. object type: fritware painted in black and blue under a clear glaze title: bowl NOTES ----- type: history note value: Frank Brangwyn RA, from whom purchased LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Applied Arts collection: Frank Brangwyn Collection creditline: Purchased with the Glaisher Fund STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/71182 TECHNIQUES ---------- fritware, probably wheel thrown, painted in black and blue under a clear, crazed glaze throwing CATEGORIES ------ category: fritware (stonepaste) DATING ------ creation date: 1200 - 1220 creation date earliest: 1200 creation date latest: 1220 culture: 13th Century, Early CREATORS -------- maker: Unknown DIMENSIONS ---------- dimension: Height units: cm value: 7 dimension: Width units: cm value: 17 CITATIONS -------- Gurgan Faiences Islamic Pottery, A comprehensive study based on the Barlow Collection Iranian Stone-Paste Pottery of the Saljuq Period.
