The cylindrical bowl has sloping sides, and stands on a low foot which is concave underneath. The exterior is decorated with a railway-train travelling to the left through a landscape with hills, trees, two cottages and a church with a spire. The six-wheeled locomotive, labelled 'MAIL', is followed by a small coal tender, three closed, four-wheeled first class carriages with luggage on their roofs, and an unoccupied brougham on an open truck. The two ends of the transfer do not meet accurately. Inside the upper edge there is a geometrical pattern with pendant tassel-like motifs.
