The ewer is of flattened pear shape, of middle eastern inspiration, resting on a high tapered foot with an unglazed edge, burnt slightly orange in the firing. The body has a raised petal-shaped panel on either side, enclosing sprays of iron-red peony and tree-peony, edged in yellow, green and red line borders, reserved against an iron-red fish-roe diaper ground scattered with chrysanthemum sprays with red and yellow blooms. The slender flared neck is set on one side with the long strap handle, decorated on the exterior with thin vertical stripes of red, green, aubergine and yellow and set at the top with a small aubergine loop. The long upright spout on the other side is decorated with ruyi and lozenge emblems hung on a tassel and attached by an 'S'-shaped support in aubergine to the neck, beneath the flanged rim encircled by a green zig-zag border. The domed cover (A) is encircled by a matching fish-roe and chrysanthemum spray border and a small green zig-zag band round the conical knop centred with an iron-red chrysanthemum flowerhead.
