Below the ship is the inscription, 'Success to the Sally'; a narrow diaper border encircles the top edge. On the outside there is a coast scene with a village on a hill, a sailing ship on the right, and a tree in the foreground; further round, is a small sailing boat. According to Glaisher's MS notebook catalogue entry, the bowl used to have a label attached to it inscribed 'Sally of Whitehaven, Captain Kenner, was taken by the French in 1757 on a voyage to St Petersburg, but this has not been verified.
