The oval base is slightly domed and has stones in relief on the viewer's left end and an applied spray of foliage in relief on the viewer's right end. Its underside is strengthened by four struts meeting in the middle, and there are two large ventilation holes in front of the central two supports. A man, a woman and a little boy are leaning over a large barrel which stands in the middle of the base. The man stands behind it, holding a beaker (or a bung) in his right hand, and looking to the viewer's left. He leans forward and rests his left hand on the back of his wife, who bends over the cask to gauge the contents. A little boy stands on a stone at the viewer's left end of the barrel and has his right arm over it to support himself. All three wear hats with shallow crowns and broad brims. The man wears baggy knee-length breeches and a three-quarter length coat. The woman has a square-necked jacket, and a long full skirt. The boy has long baggy trousers and a waist length jacket.
